John Oliver called out Governor Rick Scott on his HBO program "Last Week Tonight". He criticized the Florida politician's amendments to the state's clemency process, calling it "absolutely insane."
He opened the rant by calling Florida the "disenfranchisement capital of America", where more than 1 million Floridians can't vote because they have committed a felony at some point. He also pointed out that one in five black Floridians are barred from voting for being felons, and questions why individuals aren't automatically granted the right to vote upon completing their sentence.
Instead of automatically restoring voting rights upon release, Scott changed the clemency process to add more steps before a felon can vote again. You will first have to appear in Tallahassee in front of the four-member clemency board. This body decides whether or not the individual will receive the right to vote.
One problem he has with the clemency board? Apparently Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has a tendency to ask applicants whether or not they go to church.
He ended the rant by urging Floridians to vote for Amendment 4 and restore voting rights to 1.4 million people. "So go, please, on Nov. 6 – one day, just one day – don't take your goat for a walk in your underwear. Stay away from any bitey otters, draw a fake beard on yourself and go cast a vote on behalf of all your fellow Floridians who are unable to."
