Tampa, Fla. (970 WFLA)-Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center continue to monitor a tropical wave off the coast of Africa.
They say the system is likely to become a tropical depression by the weekend and is expected to bring heavy rains and gusty winds to the Cabo Verde Islands.
It's too early to tell if the system will eventually impact Florida. Forecaster Dennis Feltgen cautions that, even though the Atlantic hurricane season has been quiet so far, it has yet to reach its peak and residents should not be lulled into a false sense of security.
