Florida Catholic Priest Defrocked Over Abuse Claim

ORLANDO (970 WFLA) -- A Roman Catholic priest with the Orlando diocese has been kicked out of the ministry, after word that a Pennsylvania prosecutor is investigating an accusation that he sexually abused a minor in that state.

The Rev. David Gillis had been a pastor at a parish in Cocoa Beach. He has served in the Orlando region since 2005 and worked at Catholic high schools in Lakeland (Santa Fe High School) and Daytona Beach., as well as parishes in Clermont and DeBary. A diocese official says that even though Gillis has not been arrested, the charges bear "at least a semblance of truth."

A Pennsylvania grand jury found evidence of widespread sexual abuse of children involving priests, and of efforts in the Catholic Church to cover up those incidents and protect the priests.
