First School Day in Hillsborough Goes Smoothly

TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- Hillsborough County had its first day of school Friday... and school district spokesman Grayson Kamm says it went off without any major hitches.

Kamm says the new security requirements passed after Parkland, mandating armed guards or officers at all schools, didn't get in the way. He credits assistance from local law enforcement agencies, who've supplied personnel to fill in gaps while the school district finishes training its own security force.

Kamm says the new school bell times didn't pose any major problems. Elementary schools are opening earlier and high schools later. Kamm says families adjusted smoothly.

At the end of the school day, Kamm says the district is keeping elementary school buses a few minutes later for the first week or two, to make sure the youngest students know the drill for getting on the bus and getting home.
