Red Tide Creeping North From Sarasota County

Tampa, Fla. (970 WFLA)-The longest red tide outbreak in a decade continues to creep north.

Sarasota County is now under a respiratory alert, along with Lee and Charlotte counties.

Forecaster Tony Hurt at the National Weather Service in Ruskin says winds from the east are keeping the algae bloom in place,  but they could shift in a few days and that could push it north toward Manatee County.

120 miles of the gulf coast are being impacted by the toxic algae bloom,  which started back in November -- making it the longest outbreak in a decade.
