Man Shot By Polk Deputies Identified

Auburndale,Fla. (Newsradio 970 WFLA)-Forty year-old Shannon Baxley has been identified as the man wounded in a deputy-involved shooting in Polk County.

It all started with a traffic stop for a seatbelt check in north Lakeland.  During that stop, Baxley hit a deputy on Daugherty road, near Pearce Road.  The impact caused the deputy to land on the hood of the car before rolling off.  Baxley then drove away, heading  east on I-4 and then the Polk Parkway.

Deputies forced the car off the road on Berkley Road, at the end of Pace Road in Auburndale.  That's when deputies say Baxley got out of the car and reached in his waistband for what deputies thought may be a gun.  Deputies then shot Baxley.

Baxley remains hospitalized.  No deputies were hurt.
