Justice Kennedy Retires from Supreme Court

  • Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring after 30 years, giving Donald Trump his second supreme court nominee during his term in office.
  • Justice Kennedy was appointed by President Ronald Reagan- he was his third choice of nominee.
  • He is conventionally thought of as a "swing-vote" on the Supreme Court.
  • He is most remembered, especially by Democrats, as the deciding vote in the 5-4 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in 2015.
  • Most recently, he voted to uphold President Trump's travel ban.
  • The most controversial question with the potential of a new judge being appointed is whether Roe V. Wade could be overturned.
