Florida State Tax Rock-Bottom, Local Taxes Higher

TALLAHASSEE (970 WFLA) -- Florida's state taxes are so low they're at the bottom... our state ranks 50th in per capita tax revenue, according to Florida Taxwatch.

But when it comes to local tax revenue, we're at number 15.

Taxwatch economist Kurt Wenner says  local governments account for more than 53 percent of Florida's tax revenue... the second highest percentage in the nation.

Wenner says homestead exemptions and the "Save Our Homes" amendment have moved tax burdens from homeowners to businesses and renters.

Wenner hopes last week's Supreme Court ruling requiring online retailers to collect state sales taxes will allow Florida to cut out the sales taxes on business rentals.
