FHP: Drunk Wrong-Way Driver Causes Ruskin Crash

Ruskin, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A wrong-way driver faces numerous charges after driving drunk at more than 100 mph and causing a hit-and-run crash Saturday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Wendel Jamel James, 35, of Clearwater drove northbound in the southbound lanes of US-41 at about 10:30 p.m. when he crashed his 2018 Toyota Camry into another car near the intersection with Valroy Road. James drove away from the crash until an off-duty Pinellas County deputy who had seen James's car going the wrong way at high speed, pulled into the path of his car.

Neither driver in the crash, nor the deputy, suffered more than minor injuries. State Troopers arrested James DUI Property Damage, Reckless Driving and Leaving the Scene of a Crash, according to a news release from FHP.
