T. Rowe Price Closing Tampa Ops

TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- Investment management firm T. Rowe Price says it will close its Tampa operations center in June of 2019, because clients prefer interacting digitally to a phone call.

The Baltimore-based firm has a call center on Boy Scout Boulevard and has operated here since 1994, according to the firm's website. About 400 people work there, mostly in phone support and client service. T. Rowe Price says about 30 people with assigned client relationships will work remotely and remain local. The others will have opportunities to apply to offices in Owings Mills, Maryland and Colorado Springs, Colorado. About 150 positions will go away.

The company says its financial position remains strong but it's trying to get ahead of current trends. CEO William Stromberg says the firm is "grateful for the many contributions (Tampa workers) have made... By sharing this news well in advance we hope to provide them with ample opportunity and support to plan for the transition."

EDIT: A T. Rowe Price spokesman says that most of the Tampa workforce will have the opportunity to apply for positions at their Colorado and Maryland offices.
