Tampa, FLA.(970 WFLA)- Wildlife experts are warning pet owners to be on the look out as heavy rainfall can increase poisonous toad activity. The toads burrow underground during dry periods, but wet conditions brought on by storms like Alberto prompt them to reproduce and lay eggs in any freshwater they can find.
Cane toads excrete a milky poison from their back which is potent enough to kill small animals like cats or dogs if they ingest it.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are warning pet owners to be on the lookout for reddish-brown to grayish-brown toads with a light yellow belly, as they are known to eat pet food left outside.
If your pet comes in contact with a toad, you should take them to a veterinarian immediately.
