TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- The day after 10 people died in a school massacre in Texas... Tampa is hosting a violence prevention conference for teenagers Saturday (19).
Janelle McGregor with the Tampa Police Department is one of the organizers. She says the goal is to educate young people, in a setting in which they feel comfortable and are having fun.
There will be serious discussion panels about teen safety but also entertainment from sports celebrities and social media figures such as "Basketball Cop," a Gainesville police officer who became well known because of a viral video with former NBA star Shaquille O' Neal.
McGregor says law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and the public defender's office want teens and parents to know they're doing everything they can to keep teenagers from becoming victims of violence. The summit runs from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m at Hillsborough High School on Central Avenue.
