Polk Fire Still A Problem

Nalcrest, Fla.-(Newsradio 970 WFLA)-Firefighters from the Florida Forestry Service and Polk County continue to battle that stubborn wildfire near here.

Up to 450 acres have been charred in the brush fire around this small retirement community, near State Road 60, in eastern Polk. The fire is just 50 percent contained in spite of round the clock firefighting efforts.

The good news about this Nalcrest fire is that it's in a swampy area and is smoldering.  Florida Forestry Service Wildlife Specialist Todd Chlanda says no structures are in any danger right now.  There were some evacuations early-on, but those folks have been allowed to return to their homes.

The Florida Forestry Service reminds residents that it's the dry season and anything, like a discarded cigarette, could spark a wildfire.
