WINTER HAVEN (970 WFLA) -- A joint investigation by the State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Polk sheriff's office has stopped a multi-million dollar fuel scam.
State Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says thieves installed sophisticated scammers on gas pumps, put the stolen information on bogus credit cards and bought thousands of gallons of fuel to resell on the black market.
Putnam says this is not a victimless crime. Store owners lose money and everyone pays more in credit card fees.
Six people are facing racketeering charges in connection with the scam, which ran in Polk and Hillsborough counties.
