Winter Haven, Fla.-(Newsradio 970 WFLA)-A woman charged with dealing drugs here is now facing 1st degree murder charges for selling a lethal dose of fentanyl-laced heroin that killed a 31 year-old woman.
Polk County deputies say 49 year-old Melita Mendez was previously arrested in November of 2017 for trafficking in heroin, conspiracy to traffick heroin, selling heroin and more. The murder charges were added after 31 year-old Kalia Joslin of Winter Haven died after taking the mixture of drugs.
Detectives say Mendez admitted that she had sold heroin to Joslin. Deputies also have some text messages between Joslin and Mendez to purchase the drugs. Deputies also found a witness to the drug buy.
Deputies also arrested Mendez' husband, 58 year-old Idlefonso Mendez Rios. Rios is facing a long list of charges including possession of methadone, prescription medication without a prescription and drug paraphernalia.
