CLEARWATER (970 WFLA) -- The city of Clearwater is holding city elections a week from Tuesday, and code enforcement wants to make sure that overzealous volunteers don't violate the sign ordinance.
If a sign stands in the right of way, which extends from the curb to about a foot past the sidewalk, sign inspector Daniel Knight says the city can confiscate it. Even if it's on private property, Clearwater's sign ordinance says candidates have three days after election day to take those signs down. That's March 16th, a week from Friday.
If campaigners post signs on PUBLIC right of way, basically about a foot past the sidewalk, the city has the right to remove those signs at any time. Signs in yards can be no bigger than four square feet... 16 square feet at a business.
