Governor Scott unveils school safety plan

Calling it a "common sense set of actions", Governor Rick Scott has outlines his comprehensive school safety proposal.

It includes a ban on guns sales or gun possession for anyone under 21 years of age and a ban on the sale of "bump stocks", which can provide automatic capabilities to a regular firearm.

Scott's plan also allows for a "Violent Threat Restraining Order", which allows a family member, law enforcement officer or social worker to provide a sworn document asking the court to prohibit someone from possessing or owning a gun if they are a threat.  Scott says that order would make it "virtually impossible" for anyone with mental illness to use a weapon.

The governor's plan would also provide nearly a half billion dollars to provide for a school resource officer in every school in Florida.  Scott says there should be an officer for every 1,000 students.

Scott says he wants the plan approved by the state legislature within two weeks.
