Parkland School Deputy Quits, 2 Others Suspended

FORT LAUDERDALE (970 WFLA) -- Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has suspended two of his deputies and accepted the resignation of the School Resource Deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, for their conduct before and during the Parkland shooting rampage.

Israel says surveillance video shows deputy Scott Peterson took up a position outside Building 12 for several minutes, but did not go inside to confront the shooter. Israel was about to suspend Peterson without pay, pending an investigation. Peterson has enough time with the sheriff's office to qualify for retirement.

"What I saw was a deputy arrive, take up a position... and he never went in," Israel said.

Israel debunked reports that Peterson was either off-campus or hid in a classroom.

Israel says two other deputies are on suspension as he investigates their handling of the numerous calls the sheriff's office received about suspect Nikolas Cruz prior to the Feb. 14 shooting.
