Lake Wales, Fla. (970 WFLA)- The FBI now says those devices found at the Eagle Ridge Mall here were not pipe bombs.
Deputy Police Chief Troy Schulze says what was first thought to have been pipe bombs were detonated at the mall, but there were no injuries. A backpack full of similar devices was found at the scene. Bomb sniffing dogs checked out the building overnight to make sure it was safe.
Upon further examination, FBI agents have determined that they were actually marine flares that someone ignited in a mall hallway. They say the flares created a lot of smoke.
A search is on for a person of interest, a middle aged man wearing a gray shirt and a gray hat. Investigators are now looking for surveillance video.
