Small Plane Crash in Clearwater

A small plane crashed near Clearwater Airpark Airport on Sunday.

The crash happened between Drew Street and Sunset Point Road around 10:30 a.m.

According to WFLA-TV

The single-engine Rockwell International aircraft 112-A piloted by 61-year-old Marc Allen Benedict was returning to the airport from Zephyrhills Municipal Airport when it started experiencing engine trouble while in the air over the area of Sunset Point Road and Belcher Road, Benedict said.

Benedict said he worried he wouldn’t make it back to the airport and started looking for a safe place to land. He found what appeared to be an opening on Keene Road and attempted to land. Whlie landing, part of the plane caught a tree, causing the aircraft to spin and crash on the road.

Neither Benedict, nor his passenger, 55-year-old Gregory Guinee were injured.
