Tampa Self-Driving into the Future

TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- Cars that drive themselves. Tampa is a showcase for technology to make that easier this week. It's all happening as the Florida Autonomous Vehicles Summit takes place in Tampa.

The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority has been showing off the technology behind its Connected Vehicle pilot program. Cars will use devices to communicate with the road itself, and nearby traffic, to prevent crashes.  The authority, which runs the Selmon Expressway, plans to put this technology in about 16 hundred cars by next summer. Pedestrians can install an app on their phones.

Tuesday morning (14th), HART is demonstrating a self-driving shuttle it plans to use along the Marion Street transit corridor. The company that makes it, Coast Autonomous, previously demonstrated a driverless shuttle at the Museum of Science and Industry. It can travel at speeds below 25 miles per hour.
