Add $500 to the Cost of Driving Drunk in St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG (970 WFLA) -- Starting today, police in St. Petersburg will start charging $500 for DUI suspects trying to get their car out of the impound lot.

Spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez says it's intended to make people "think twice" before driving under the influence, "that in addition to everything else, they have to pay that extra (money) to get their vehicle back."

Similar impound fees are charged to people arrested on drug and prostitution charges.

Depending on the state, a first arrest for DUI can already cost someone as much as $20,000.
