ORMOND-BY-THE-SEA, FL (970 WFLA) -- "The miserable excuse for a human being who did this has a cold lump of meat for a heart!! That's Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood's response to a report by his deputies that someone left some tampered meat in a place where it could have done harm to dogs.
Dog owners who arrived at the Bicentennial Park dog park in Ormond by the Sea Tuesday found small balls of meat scattered around, some with fishhooks planted inside. The obvious implication is that someone put them there intending to harm the dogs who go there.
Volusia County Sheriff's Deputies say a resident told them she found five meat balls, after one dog started to eat one. That dog went to the vet along with two of the meatballs. Fortunately, an examination showed no sign of metal. A deputy found another meatball in the grass.
Right now, deputies don't know who placed the meat. They note that there's a meeting scheduled for today (Wednesday) to discuss expanding the dog park, and some neighbors are against the idea.
