St. Petersburg, Fla. (970 WFLA)- An alert FHP Trooper is credited with helping save the lives of three boaters.
Sunday afternoon, Corporal Jim Covert noticed three people hanging onto an overturned boat in the water near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Corporal Covert made a call requesting assistance and learned that no rescue vessels were in the immediate area.
Fast-thinking, he found St. Petersburg's David Teichman, who got on his jet ski, and raced to the scene about 200 yards offshore. Teichman brought the boaters safely to shore.
The boaters had launched from St. John’s Pass, traveled to the Skyway Bridge, had begun to take on water, and were later capsized by large waves.
