Withlacoochee Flooding Keeps Hernando On Edge

BROOKSVILLE (970 WFLA) -- Most areas are out of a state of emergency. But Hernando County has extended theirs another seven days.

The problem is flooding along the Withlacoochee River, still a day away from cresting, and expected to stay at flood stage for several days. Homes are flooded and there's a voluntary evacuation order.

"(The river's) at 17.26 feet and it's expected to crest at 17.6 feet Wednesday, and stay at that level for a few days," according to Virginia Singer with Hernando County.

Singer says the water is very deep, inside homes, and rescuers are chest-deep in some locations. About four thousand people are under the evacuation order.
