Irma Brings Need for Blood Donations

ORLANDO (970 WFLA) -- The blood bank that serves most of Florida's major cities is calling for donations now, in case Hurricane Irma makes landfall and causes enough destruction to shut down blood drives in parts of the state.

OneBlood officials say they don't want a repeat of what happened in Texas just days ago, when Hurricane Harvey shut down blood collections. Other blood banks around the nation, including OneBlood, stepped in to help.

Already, OneBlood is helping other areas potentially affected by Irma, sending a shipment of 100 units to Puerto Rico.

OneBlood donor stations and Big Red Buses (bloodmobiles) are taking donations for as long as possible.
