Deputies: Woman Held Captive, Beaten By Her Family

Riverview, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Deputies rescued a woman held captive and beaten by her her husband and in-laws from India, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Devbir S. Kalsi, 33, and his parents - Jasbir and Bhupinder Kalsi - all face charges in what deputies call a case of domestic violence against Devbir Kalsi's wife Silky Gaind at their home in Riverview. HCSO got a call from Gaind's parents in India saying that she was imprisoned and being beaten at her home.

Deputies went to check on her at the home on Greenbank Drive. No one answered a deputy's knock at the door, but he believed people were inside and continued to knock. Then Gaind suddenly opened the door and screamed for him to save her and her baby, according to a HCSO news release.

The deputy had to force his way in to the house as Devbir Kalsi tried to close the door on him. Other deputies joined him and found Gaind "badly beaten and bruised over her entire body," the news release said.

Deputies say that that Devbir Kalsi contacted his parents in India regarding his wife being disobedient and they traveled here to help him discipline her. They say that the parents helped hold Gaind and the baby against their will, took away  her phone so she could not call for help and held a knife to her throat.

The husband and his parents were arrested and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on charges including false imprisonment, felony battery and child abuse. Deputies notified the Florida Abuse Hotline and ICE, and found Gaind and the child a place of refuge.
