Blood Bank Asks for Donations After Harvey

TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- The blood bank that serves most of the state of Florida, including the Tampa Bay area, is asking people to roll up their sleeves, as it sends urgently needed blood to areas affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

One Blood communications director Susan Forbes says they sent a hundred units to Texas Monday. "we were able to send an initial shipment right away, and we will continue to send blood until they no longer need assistance." That could take weeks. Blood banks nationwide are helping out southeast Texas.

But that means they'll have to step up donations from Floridians. Forbes says they've sent out messages to donors. One Blood continues to hold blood drives around the region over the next few days.
