Fumes At Indoor Swimming Pool Sickens Five Children

Tampa,Fla.(970 WFLA)- Pool chemicals released into the air at an indoor swimming pool sent five children to the hospital after they complained of becoming nauseous from the fumes.

The owner of Calypso Pool on Bearrs Avenue, says an afternoon thunderstorm  tripped a breaker, shutting off a circulating pump.  But another  pump kept sending chlorine and muriatic acid into the pipes, causing a  build up in the system.   When the pumped kicked back on, it sent two and a half gallons of the mixture into the pool water,  releasing  a small cloud of chlorine gas into the air.

A Hillsborough Fire and Rescue HAZMAT team aired out the building and after the pool chemicals were balanced the building was cleared of the sicking smell.
