David Gee is retiring.
The long-time Hillsborough County sheriff released a statement to deputies Friday afternoon announcing that he'll remain on the job until the end of September.
In his internal memo, Gee thanks the men and women of the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office, telling them that they have made a difference in the community and that his decision to retire "was one of the most difficult decisions that I have made in my career."
Gee's announcement was pre-empted by one made by state Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Gee has been in law enforcement for 40 years.
