Rabies Confirmed In Polk County

BatsLakeland, Fla.-(Newsradio 970 WFLA)-The Polk County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Section has confirmed the first positive rabies case in the county for 2017. The positive reading came from a bat found in a residential area of Lakeland.

A resident of Cara Circle found his dogs nipping at a bat in the yard.  The bat had apparently been in the mouths of the dogs.

Animal Control was called in and impounded the bat.  The bat was sent to a lab and tested positive for rabies.

Both dogs have had their rabies shots, but have been placed on home quarantine for ten days.  Sheriff Grady Judd says this case is a good reminder to make sure your pets are up to date with their vaccines.
