Man Shot And Killed By Officer Identified

Tarpon Springs, Fla. (970 WFLA)- Tarpon Springs Police have identified the person shot and killed by an off duty police office at a downtown car show Saturday. 

25 year old Nicholas Provenza of Palm Harbor, was shot,  after  he allegedly came at the officer with a knife.   The name of the  officer who shot Provenza has not been released, he was not injured. The investigation has been handed over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.   

According to the police report,  visitors to the car show reported there was a suspicious white male riding a bike, wearing an orange jacket with the hood pulled over his head. 

The officer attempted to question  the bicyclist,  at the intersection of Tarpon and Safford.  Over the police radio,  he told dispatch, that he was out with the subject and was provided a name and date of birth, which did not come back with any results. 

The officer advised the suspect, that he gave him a fake name.  Over the radio, the officer stated another last name, then there was silence, suddenly, the officer came over the radio stating "shots fired","shots fired", "shots fired".   The officer advised over the radio "He came at me with a knife".
