USF Football Player Injured in Shooting

Tampa, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A University of South Florida football player suffered three gunshot wounds in what Tampa Police call a road rage shooting late Saturday. Hassan Childs, 22, went to the hospital after the shooting. TPD answered a call of shots fired at the Eagles Point Apartments in Tampa Palms at 11:15 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find Childs shot three times.

Police say that Jovanni Jimenez, 26, told them that he shot Childs in self defense after Childs pointed a gun at him and his wife, Jennifer. Police have not filed any charges, and say they continue to investigate.

USF released a statement Sunday afternoon from head football coach Charlie Strong:  "We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting. Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."

Childs is a redshirt senior defensive back. He has played in 26 games in his career at USF.
