Bradenton, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A driver died during a race at Desoto Speedway Saturday night. David Steele, 42, was competing in the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series at the 3/8-mile paved oval when his car tangled with another car, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's office. Steele's car went airborne, spun 180 degrees and struck the retaining wall.
Fox Sports reports that Steele made starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and the Verizon IndyCar Series in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but enjoyed his greatest success in Silver Crown, sprint car and midget car racing. Steele was trying to win his 100th Florida race Saturday night. The speedway offered its condolences on its Facebook page:
