'Stolen Valor' Suspect Facing New Charge

LAKELAND, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Another victim has come forward claiming a Polk County man was posing as a military veteran and soliciting money.

Kyle Barwan, 27, was already charged in a "stolen valor" case.

Now, a second woman said she met Barwan through the website "Plenty of Fish."

She claimed that Barwan was posing as a green beret captain in the U.S. Special Forces. Investigators said he went so far as to say he worked for the CIA as a mercenary, and performed several "hits" in the Lakeland area.

Initially, the victim said she was 100 percent convinced Barwan was a military officer.

But then Barwan started asking for money.  Polk deputies said she gave him 150-200 dollars to help him pay rent and his phone bill.  She also gave another $60 so Barwan could buy a Microsoft computer program and a video game controller.

When the victim threatened to call police, Barwan blew it off, saying "you'll find that I'm way too connected."

Apparently not, as he was arrested.  Barwan was already charged with scamming money from Katie Brees of Seffner using the stolen valor scam.

Barwan was held in the Polk County Jail on $7,500 bond.
