Car Fleeing Cops Drives into Tampa Lake

Tampa, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A car fleeing a Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy crashed into a lake in Tampa early Friday. The man accused of driving now faces several charges, including DUI and driving with a revoked license.

The HCSO says a deputy tried to do a traffic stop on Leroy Henry, 21, as he drove a green Infinity sedan swerving on Himes Avenue near Waters Ave. just before 1:30 a.m. The car took off. The deputy did not chase, but continued north on Himes to the intersection with Busch Blvd., where two people told him that they had just seen a car crash into White Trout Lake.

Three deputies and a witness jumped into the lake to see if anyone was in the car, but it had already sunk too deep for them to reach it. A dive team confirmed that no one was inside.

A short time later deputies found a man soaking wet in the area of Himes and Sligh Avenues. He refused to cooperate with deputies, but they later identified him as Henry, who was out on bond after violating terms of probation from a previous conviction.
