Hillsborough County commissioners are now considering a paid parental leave plan for county employees.
County commissioner Sandra Murman says expanding the county's current one-week paid parental leave for county employees is the right thing to do. She says it gives parents more time to bond with their new baby without the stress of coming back to work right away.
And she says it's great for business because prospective employees choose jobs based on health care and paid leave.
Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn recently announced that city employees will get eight paid weeks of parental leave for primary caregivers--two weeks for secondary caregivers. The city's cost would reach nearly $300,000.
Commissioners say they want staff to return soon with a breakdown on how much paid parrental leave will cost the county, which employs 4,600 people.
