Miami Beach, FL - A man is facing charges after he allegedly hit an Uber driver with an umbrella and carjacked him on South Florida highway.
The incident occurred on Monday evening on the westbound I-195 ramp to northbound I-95 in Miami-Dade.
According to an arrest report, the Uber driver picked up Rafael Dos Santo Barbosa at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach.
Police say at one point during the ride, Barbosa ordered the driver to stop, then struck him in the shoulder with a metal object.
The driver stopped the vehicle and exited the car.
Barbosa then got in the driver's seat and drove off, leaving the victim without his phone.
Investigators tracked Barbosa by calling a friend who provided police with Barbosa's address.
When authorities arrived at the address, they found Barbosa speaking with Miami-Dade police, who had been called to investigate a suspicious vehicle that turned out to be the stolen Uber.
Inside the vehicle, authorities found the umbrella that Barbosa had used to hit the driver.
Barbosa told investigators that the Uber driver had been going in the wrong direction and that he told him to stop, but the driver refused until Barbosa "raised his voice."
Barbosa was arrested and charged with carjacking, aggravated battery, and grand theft.
He's being held without bond. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
