Do you use food delivery apps? How much extra are you paying - and which app has the highest markup?
Self.inc did a study to find out how 100 big cities rank when it comes to food delivery app markups and to determine which apps have the highest pricing.
They ordered the same meal at McDonald's in each city - a Quarter Pounder meal, a 10-piece McNugget, a regular Coke, and a side of regular fries - on each of the three big delivery apps - Uber Eats, GrubHub, and Door Dash.
They compared the restaurant price of each meal to the cost to have the meal delivered through each app.
Here are some of their findings.
Seattle, Washington is the highest city for food delivery markup, with a meal that would cost $23.53 in a restaurant coming in at $55.35 when purchased through an app. That's a markup of 105.1%.
Virginia Beach, Virginia has the highest percentage markup, with a $13.75 meal costing $39.12 via delivery app, a 184% markup.
How does Tampa Bay rank?
We're at number 27 on the list of 100, but our percentage markup really isn't that bad compared to many of the other cities.
In Tampa Bay, customers pay an average of $42.31 for a meal that would cost $29.30 in the restaurant - a markup of 44%.
As for the most expensive app, Uber Eats is at the top of the list with an average markup of 105.1%.
GrubHub has the lowest pricing of the major apps with a 94.8% markup and DoorDash not far behind with 95.3%.
