Miami-Dade, FL - A firearms instructor was accidentally shot while conducting a course at a South Florida gun range Wednesday morning.
According to Miami-Dade police, the instructor was shot just before 10:30 a.m. at the Trail Glades Range near the intersection of Southwest Eighth Street and Krome Avenue immediately east of the Miccosukee Casino & Resort in west Miami-Dade.
The instructor was filmed being loaded into an ambulance before being airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Witness Dario Pederajo says the shooting happened in the part of the range used by law enforcement officers.
Pederajo says officers surrounded the range and ordered everyone to put their guns down, telling Local 10 News "on the police range side it’s mainly Customs and Border (Protection), they come on Wednesday for practice. Several police officers came running over to the civilian side of the range, where the main office is, and said someone had been shot, stop shooting.”
Local law enforcement officers and federal agents were seen gathering at Ryder Trauma Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the instructor, who works for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is in critical condition.
