A now-former teacher will spend three years in prison and register as a sex offender after accepting a plea deal with the state for having sex in a classroom closet with a former student who was underage.

41-year old Daniel Norment worked at Independence Middle in Jupiter at the time of the crime. He was in court on Monday morning.

"The paperwork I've been handed, sir, leads me to believe that you intend to plead guilty in your best interests on two counts...both of which are second degree felonies. One is unlawful sexual activity with a minor and the other is offense against students by an authority figure."

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Gillen sentenced Norment 2 concurrent three year terms, followed by 2 concurrent four year probation periods and he must register as a sex offender.

As part of the plea deal, Norment will never again be able to work at a school.

The teen accusing Norment was in high school at the time of the sex and was volunteering to help him in his class.
