TAMPA -- Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday in Scotland, visited at least two Florida cities during her 70-year reign.
She arrived in the state May 17, 1991, after a state visit in Washington (pictured). Her Miami visit included a stop at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Overtown and met VIPs at Vizcaya Museum. The queen also met with Marjory Stoneman Douglas, then 101 years old, pioneering environmentalist and the namesake of the high school in Parkland.
The monarch spent part of May 20, 1991 in Tampa, where she awarded a knighthood to General Norman Schwarzkopf. At the time he headed U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, and was being recognized for the success of Operation Desert Storm in removing Iraqi forces from Kuwait. She also greeted well-wishers on downtown's Franklin Street and was the guest at an invitation-only event at the University of Tampa.
