Some Teachers In One Treasure Coast County Bringing Guns To School

A parent in one Florida school district speaks out about teachers packing heat.

Cheyenne Sager has a child heading into kindergarten at an Okeechobee County school next month.

"As long as the teacher knows gun safety I don't see a problem with it."

Superintendent Ken Kenworthy tells CBS 12 News that it's about redundancy, because each school has a resource officer on campus everyday as well.

"The quicker you can respond the more lives that you can save and so that's why I think it's very important for us to be able to have that additional backup on a school campus."

Okeechobee County is the only school district on the Treasure Coast allowing teachers to bring guns to school under the Aaron Feis Guardian Program that was started in Florida after the Parkland shooting.

Those teachers are receiving extensive firearms training and must go through quarterly training with the sheriff's office.

The district is not releasing specifics on how many teachers are volunteering or the schools where they work.

Kenworthy says they've been taking part in the program since the 2018-19 school year and no teachers have had to draw their weapons on campus.
