Cave-In Closes Tampa Intersection

Traffic headache in Tampa to be aware of.

The intersection of West Brorein and South Parker Streets will be closed for about the next two weeks for emergency repairs to determine the cause of a cave-in around a 60-inch wastewater mainline pipe that's 20 feet under the street. "What happens when you have a hole," said Tampa Wastewater Dept. Director Eric Weiss, "the existing groundwater and soil around the pipe gets washed into the pipe creating a void that eventually gets bigger and bigger until the road around it caves in."

Weiss said many of the city's wastewater pipes are close to 100 years old.

A detour has been set up, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and find another route.
