An investigation is underway in Martin County after a racist photo went out on social media.

It appears to show a group of six students in front of Hidden Oaks Middle School, each holding up a letter to spell the N-word.

Students brought it to the attention of administrators when they saw screenshots making the rounds on Facebook.

School District spokesperson Jennifer DeShazo tells CBS 12 News that they are working to confirm the photo's authenticity and identify any students who may have been involved.

"The Martin County School District has zero tolerance for any type of discriminatory, hurtful language, messages, slurs anything of that nature."

Part of what she calls a "thorough" investigation includes checking surveillance video from the school in Palm City.
