Welfare check on South Florida man leads to giant drug bust

PUNTA GORDA, FL - A man found sleeping in his car was arrested after police found drugs on him early Friday morning in a South Florida parking lot.

Around 4:30 a.m., Punta Gorda police conducted a welfare check on Jeremy Allen Jones, who was found sleeping in his car in the Downtown Gatorz Bar And Grill parking lot. 

When police asked if he had identification, Jones acted suspicious and pulled out a large amount of cash tied in rubber bands from the center console.

Police conducted a search of his vehicle and found a gym bag that blew an unknown powdery substance in an officer’s face when opened.

Inside the gym bag, police found 497 grams of methamphetamine, 133 grams of crack cocaine, 65 grams of marijuana, four hydrocodone pills, an unknown brown powdery substance, an unknown multicolored substance, digital scales, cellphones, and small plastic bags.

Police also found more than $7,600 in cash.

Jones was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail on charges of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
