About 200 veterans from West and Central Florida are taking the trip of a lifetime today. They left Lakeland Linder Airport this morning for Washington on an Honor Flight to tour the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. Among those on the flight, Army veteran Gerald Miklavcic. "I'm very fortunate, very lucky, very blessed," he said. "Some veterans aren't able to (make this flight), but I'm glad to have this opportunity."
World War II veteran Herman Jenkins tells News Channel 8 he will be celebrating his 103rd birthday today, as he takes his Honor Flight. "I'm excited about having a chance to see things that I would like to have seen some years ago," Jenkins said.
The Honor Flight Network has flown more than 250-thousand veterans to Washington since 2005. Rep. Scott Franklin (R-Lakeland) helped organize today's flight.
