Florida officer charged with fraudulently billing his own department

A Sergeant with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department turned himself in Thursday on charges that he fraudulently billed his department for work hours.

Sgt. James McDowell faces three counts of grand theft and one count of organized scheme to defraud after working off-duty details while also working his regularly scheduled shifts with the police department.

According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, McDowell allegedly signed up for off-duty details while working his scheduled shifts; resulting in fraudulent hours being billed, costing the department thousands of dollars.

McDowell turned himself in to the Broward County Main Jail and is being held on $14,000 bond.

McDowell has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of the case.

In a statement, Fort Lauderdale Police Department spokeswoman Casey Liening said "these alleged actions do not reflect the character and professionalism of the men and women of this agency."
