The Holiday Money Hunt is on and it could mean money that belongs to you will be returned during the holiday season.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis is encouraging residents to search and see if you or your business has unclaimed property.

In a promotional video, he says some of the money may have been abandoned in a safe deposit box or money you didn't even know existed.

"One in five Floridians has unclaimed property just waiting to be claimed and it only takes a few minutes."

Patronis says Florida has $2.5 billion in unclaimed property available and now is a great time to claim it.

"During the holidays, everyone can use a little extra cash and a little unexpected check from the state of Florida might help the holidays be a little brighter this year."

The Chief Financial Officer says that his office has returned $1.4 billion to Floridians since 2017.
