Palm Beach County's school district leader is apologizing for a joke he called inappropriate, and it was tied to the state's ban on mask mandates.

At the start of Wednesday's School Board meeting, Superintendent Michael Burke apologized for this comment that he made the day before at a Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches event, when someone asked what they could do to help the school district.

"Yes. Send lawyers, guns and money, please."

Burke explained on Wednesday that he cited lyrics to a classic rock song from Warren Zevon as a joke.

"It was fully intended to be a light-hearted quip. But I understand guns should not have been referenced in any manner. I apologize and take full responsibility for my inappropriate comment. Please know that I only want the best for all students within our county and will continue to work hard as superintendent."

The school district is expecting notice from the Department of Education for violating policy with its mask mandate.

The board voted to hire legal counsel to challenge the state's ban.
